Traditions and Etiquette in Muay Thai
When training Muay Thai in Thailand, it’s important to understand and respect the traditions of the sport:
- Respect for Trainers: Your trainer (often referred to as Kru) is a highly respected figure. Always show respect, listen to instructions carefully, and thank them after each session.
- Wai Kru Ceremony: Before a fight, fighters perform the Wai Kru Ram Muay, a traditional dance that shows respect to their trainers, family, and ancestors. This ritual is deeply rooted in Thai culture and is a significant part of any Muay Thai fight.
- Gym Etiquette: Always be respectful of your fellow fighters and the gym environment. Clean up after yourself, arrive on time, and follow the instructions of the trainers. Bowing or wai (a respectful Thai greeting) is customary when entering and leaving the ring.
